Zoom meetings on your Smart TV

Why did it take me so long to realize this?

I have a friend coming over on Friday night, and we plan on watching another friend’s poetry reading via Zoom. Instead of huddling around a laptop screen and getting sore necks, I wondered, wouldn’t it be nice if we could use the largest screen in the house, the Sony smart TV, to view it from comfortable chairs?

There are many ways to accomplish this small feat. I’ll share the simplest one. Here is what you need.

  • HDMI cable
  • Laptop with HDMI port
  • Smart TV with HDMI
  • A flashlight
  • Manual dexterity

Ready? Let’s do it..

  1. Connect the HDMI cable to the laptop
  2. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable to an open HDMI port on the TV. Here is where the flashlight and manual dexterity come in handy.
  3. Make sure the TV and laptop are turned on.
  4. Use your TV remote control’s input selector and choose the proper HDMI input.
  5. You should see the laptop display mirrored on your television. Voila!
  6. Now open the Zoom app on the laptop.
  7. Join a Zoom meeting.
  8. Adjust the audio settings in Zoom. Select the TV’s display for your speaker output. (When I first tested it, Zoom was defaulting to the built-in laptop speakers.)
