At the office

A poem about surviving the work day

Inside, fans and hums
are dutiful company

time leaps like astronauts
in yawning lunar pauses

ringing phones swirl
around tired twisted hearts.

I grin, knowing ways
to outlast this limbo

I can ball a paper towel, toss
it in the trash basket behind my back

I can spy from my desk the trees
washed blue through tinted glass

I can see my car waiting
at the edge of the lot

I can feel a less ghostly world
hanging on a breath line

always about to be splendid
because I know my lover

will meet me soon outside
and embrace me.
